SPINAL injuries could be repaired with embryonic stem (ES) cells, say researchers. Because of their potential to be transformed into virtually any sort of cell, researchers are looking at using ES cells to treat a wide range of injuries—particularly damage to the central nervous system. Now John McDonald and his team at the Washington University School of Medicine have transplanted ES cells from mice into rats with badly damaged spinal cords. The treated animals regained some movement, whereas untreated animals did not (Nature Medicine, vol 5, p 1410). Two weeks after the transplant, ES-derived cells were present throughout the injury site.
